Textures

For the final part of our elements brief, we added textures to our colored elements. We used the same color palette and experimented with various textures. For example I used teabag powder, tinfoil, cotton buds and rubbings.

Comping exercise

After experimenting with different types, we began to put it into a text format. This involved a new process called comping. We comped text and created sketches of a double spreadsheet which would express our chosen word. I then copied and pasted different elements and then created a negative version of the final on the printer.

Colour elements

In order to explore design principles and elements further, we explored colour through our already designed pieces. We used Kuler colour wheel to pick the appropriate hues while following the colour rule strictly. The rules I used for my finished pieces were mainly monochromatic, analogous and complementary which supported my selected words. The common colour I chose for my 4 pieces was blue. The medium used to create my finals was acrylic paints.

Design Principles and Practice- design elements

 Our aim for this project was to explore various design elements. In order to do this, we chose a list of words and conducted stream of consciousness mindmapping and brainstorming on each word. We then sketched ideas based on these words and included squares and circles to express the words.

Expressive type

On 18/10/16 we started a new typography project. The aim was to deconstruct and express type in a new creative manner. For this, I researched Swiss typographers and David Carson and used their works as inspiration to develop my own. I used different methods to deconstruct type like tearing it, dipping it in teabag solution, changing the grey scale etc as part of my brainstorming. The end result was a 3D box, each side containing opposite words expressing its meaning. The words I chose were DARK/LIGHT, ORDERED/CHAOTIC, STRAIGHT/WAVY.
